This is an example of an english soap, where the charachters lives are worse that those of the viewers. This is so the audience can experience catharsis - the purging of negative emotions by watching someone go through something similar or worse.
Overview
• Opens with establishing shot of the ‘Queen Victoria Pub’. Shows the audience the type of working class setting the soap is set in. Fades to black
• Slow non dietetic music playing in the background creates suspension
• Over the shoulder shot in MCU of Stacey crying and a man saying ‘Who did this to you’. Creates a dramatic atmosphere
• Fades to another establishing low angle shot of the pub, then quickly goes into a MS shot of blonde haired woman. Voice over speaking and she looks frantic. Turns round quickly and camera changes as she does this
• 3 different shots of characters all edited together quickly. All in MS with the characters looking just above the camera. MES of night time lighting to portray the depressing atmosphere of eastenders, with coats on etc. To show that it is dark and cold – pathetic fallacy to indicate the settings of the characters lifestyles
• POV shot of Phil opening the door and coming in to the pitch black room. Diegetic
dialogue of him saying “Im going to kill him” in an over the shoulder shot.
• Pans up to a man pouring a drink in the pub, and raising his glass to a statue. Irony in this as it contrasts with everything else that has appeared so far in the trailer.
• Finishes with BBC title card saying time and date of the show.
We tried to use many of these camera techniques in our trailer, and the way mine is edited together is similar to this trailer in order to create the drama. However our trailer greatly contrasted with eastenders in that we wanted a far more middle class feel to it, with more posh settings and the characters appearing to be richer. Also out trailer was more light-hearted than the eastenders one, and we aimed ours at a different target audience. This is shown by the age and appearance of the characters in our trailer compared to the eastenders one.
