Final soap trailer

This refers to evaluation question

This is my final trailer having made all the changes from the audience feedback given to me. I had changed the
  •  Editing so that it matched the music, to fade in and out on the clicks
  • The order of shots so that the the reverse shots went together, and the storyline about Gary made sense
  • Added another title card to engage the audience and really make the story lines clearer
  • Add a title card at the end with e4 branding
This overall made my trailer much more professional. I also included the time and date the show would be aired, so as to locate a target audience. There were still a few areas I felt I could have improved however, such as sharper edits all the way throughout and a less pixelated end title card. However overall I felt that my trailer works pretty successfully.

Media coursework second draft

This evaluation refers to question 3

Following the previous audience feedback I had greatly improved the trailer. The title cards had been used more effectively, to give the audience a better idea of the story and edited to create drama. The edits had been all put in place, and all ran smoothly together, and matched the music track I had chosen. The track was edited in garage band so that it was much more smooth and even throughout. However there were still a lot of areas I needed to improve on according to the feedback :
  •  Use of branding at the end title card needed to be improved
  • Music needs to be an even volume throughout, when dipped and when at the original volume
  • Sharpness of editing needs to be improved - use of fade on the clicks of the track
  • The use of reverse angle editing needs to be better
  • The gay storyline needs to make more sense and be emphasised more as it is an important part of the trailer
Reference to evaluation question 1
The Made in chelsea trailer had influenced my title cards, by the use of repetition. Also the way I tried to edit it a fast pace was similar to the Chelsea trailer. However the way my song and clips worked together was very different.

Unused footage

Refers too question 3 and 4

Here is a selection of footage from the clips that we couldn't use in our trailer. Half of the reason for this was that the camera was upside down on two of the scenes, and this was not able to be turned round the right way. It therefore looked unprofessional and did not match the conventions of a trailer so it could not be used. This could have been solved by usage of a tripod

Also some of the scenes were Gary the gay character was supposed to be crying received feedback like "It's not realistic enough" and "It doesn't fit with the rest of the trailer", so they had to be edited out of the trailer.

In the first clip, the girls were walking into a cafe and it was supposed to be used as an establishing shot. Due to the poor quality of footage however most of the cafe scene was cut out and this meant this establishing shot was not relevant. Also the fast paced edit of my trailer meant there was little room for establishing shots. Also due to a name change the shot of the elm bank sign was unnecessary and therefore could not be used.

Finally due to the majority of my group not having any acting experience there was a lot of outtakes in the footage. The hardest scene to shoot was the one where Gary came out to his brother, and they was a lot of wasted camera footage. It would have been easier to shoot over the shot clips so that it could have been broken up into smaller lines.

Media coursework Rough cut

This evaluation refers to question 3

This is my original draft of my trailer. After I had got the sound track sorted I felt that my scenes and edits had began to come together well. However, I still needed to change some things such as the edits of the music to be smoother and to change the order of some of the clips so as to make the story clearer. I showed the class the trailer and got this feedback:
  •  Good use of fades inbetween clips
  • Well edited to make parrallel narratives clear
  • Good choice of music to match scenes
I also was suggested these changes
  •  Make the music quieter when charachters were speaking
  • Continue to use fades throughout the trailer
  • Use title cards more effectively
  • Cut the length of some of the shots
I also knew that I needed an ending title card, and had to add more title cards throughout the trailer to make the story clearer. From watching other soap trailers, I realised my editing had to be sharper to match the non deigetic music.

Question 1 Evaluation reference

From watching a Made in Chelsea trailer I saw that repetition was an interesting feature of title cards. I decided to use this in my trailer by using all words that began with the letter 'D' to match conventions. I also needed to add an effect to the way the words appeared onto the page.

Soap Magazine

This refers to evaluation questions 1 + 2
From our research into soap magazines we found that there were two main types of design. The first one is a more smart and organised design, as seen with the radio times. The second one has a trashy layout, and is filled with different colours and images etc. This is the type of layout we went for as we felt it was more typical of the soap magazine genre.
The features we would try to include to create an authentic soap magazine would be
  • Lots of different images
  • Making sure the pictures are of the charachters in costume
  • Lots of bright varied colours
  • Dramatic headings
  • Headlines about different soaps other than our own

Ancillary research

This refers to evaluation question 2
We wanted to continue the E4 branding in out ancillary as this is the institution we wanted BeechMount to be broadcast on. This meant it was important to create an authentic E4 logo to go on the bottomo right of our poster. We decided to go for something similar to this ancillary, as it is simple and the picture does most of the explanation without the need for words around the page. The main characters need to stand out, and are dressed in costume that they would be wearing in the show. This is something that we made sure we did when taking the photos of our characters for the ancillaries. Also the setting of the poster was important to let the audience know what the soap is and creates the mise en scene for the soap.

East enders opening credits
View more presentations from JackGilmartin

From the eastenders research, it was clear that just from the opening drums and picture that the audience would know what soap it was. This was because it had a clear brand identity. This was something I tried to establish with my soap through my product and ancillaries, so that it it could be easily recognisable and easily related to by an audience. However as my target audience was different (16-24) the branding had to be completely different to eastenders.

Made in Chelsea

This evaluation refers to question 1 and 4

As I had decided to promote my trailer at a target audience of 16-24 year olds I researched into trailer with a similar target audience. By using youtube I searched into some of these trailers. The best example I found was this made in chelsea trailer. It follows the lives of people who all know each other and live in the same area, with interweaving storylines. This was the type of trailer I wanted to make so this was a good one to research

The trailer is made up of lots of different clips edited together. It is edited at a fast pace, which is how I wanted my trailer to be. It also has a backing track of non diegetic sounds played behind the diegetic dialogue. It also makes use of title cards with a clear branding, in order to tell the story and make the branding clear to the audience.

Also many of the clips are just charachters expressions or one liners, and use of over the shoulder shot types and establishing shots. My soap would be shot like this, with variations on edits and features. Also the Made in Chelsea trailer is more upbeat than the storyline ideas my group had, however some of the characters were relatable to the ones in Made in Chelsea. It was a good trailer overall to use as a style model, and helped to highlight soap conventions.

Preliminary Soap trailer

This evaluation refers to questions 1 and 4

To start off my coursework we collected a number of scenes from soaps such as coronation street. This enabled me to learn the conventions of trailers such as how to use the backing track, and how to edit scenes together and create parrallel narrative. It also enabled to understand the software such as imovie, and garage band to create an original soap trailer.

Eastenders Trailer

This refers to evaluation question 1 + 4
This is an example of an english soap, where the charachters lives are worse that those of the viewers. This is so the audience can experience catharsis - the purging of negative emotions by watching someone go through something similar or worse.
Overview
• Opens with establishing shot of the ‘Queen Victoria Pub’. Shows the audience the type of working class setting the soap is set in. Fades to black
• Slow non dietetic music playing in the background creates suspension
• Over the shoulder shot in MCU of Stacey crying and a man saying ‘Who did this to you’. Creates a dramatic atmosphere
• Fades to another establishing low angle shot of the pub, then quickly goes into a MS shot of blonde haired woman. Voice over speaking and she looks frantic. Turns round quickly and camera changes as she does this
• 3 different shots of characters all edited together quickly. All in MS with the characters looking just above the camera. MES of night time lighting to portray the depressing atmosphere of eastenders, with coats on etc. To show that it is dark and cold – pathetic fallacy to indicate the settings of the characters lifestyles
• POV shot of Phil opening the door and coming in to the pitch black room. Diegetic
dialogue of him saying “Im going to kill him” in an over the shoulder shot.
• Pans up to a man pouring a drink in the pub, and raising his glass to a statue. Irony in this as it contrasts with everything else that has appeared so far in the trailer.
• Finishes with BBC title card saying time and date of the show.
We tried to use many of these camera techniques in our trailer, and the way mine is edited together is similar to this trailer in order to create the drama. However our trailer greatly contrasted with eastenders in that we wanted a far more middle class feel to it, with more posh settings and the characters appearing to be richer. Also out trailer was more light-hearted than the eastenders one, and we aimed ours at a different target audience. This is shown by the age and appearance of the characters in our trailer compared to the eastenders one.

Ancillary eastenders

To know the soap ancillary conventions we created our own poster, using publisher and clips from eastenders on BBC i-player. This gave us an idea of how to create our own for the trailer, and we could take examples such as the made in chelsea poster to give us ideas on how to construct ours.

Soap opera
View more presentations from JackGilmartin.

To begin my coursework I researched into american and english soaps. I found that audiences wanted very different things from both, english audiences wanted relatable storylines whereas american audiences wanted glamour and drama. I also looked at previous sopas and their brands to give me ideas for what my own soap could be.
